  • Never heard of these guys before this interview, but the fact that two dudes in their 50s/60s can still be so open to new ideas and optimistic about the future of music really warms my heart. Definetely going to check out their work! :)

  • WBEZ was always on in my house when I was younger, so I was listening to Sound Opinions before I knew what good music was!! It was really cool to see Jim & Greg come on for an interview, honestly a bit of a worlds collide moment for me. Really enjoyed listening to you guys talk about how music reviewing has changed from a more generational standpoint :)

  • Underrated interview! Didn't expect it to be a breakdown of critiquing as an art. Went far deeper than I thought It would.

  • I remember reading Jim's book of collected writing, Milk It, while I was in college 15-16 years ago and I loved his voice. I was also turned on to Greg's artist profiles in the Tribune so when they started a radio show I would try to listen each week. This is an awesome interview, 3 of my favorite living music critics in the same place. When I first started watching Melon I thought he had a bit of Jim and Greg in his reviews. Made my day right here.

  • I talked to Jim DeRogatis for an assignment during my intro to journalism course freshman year of college. Reached out on a whim and he responded by email within a couple hours. He's a genuine, passionate, witty guy who loves music who was kind enough to take half an hour out of his day to talk to some geeky college freshman. One of the GOATS.

  • Thank you for doing this. This was a very enlightening discussion about music...I know these kinds of videos don't do numbers, but I love this. And, of course, I now need to check out Sound Opinions!

  • What age do you tune out... when you realize what genres you really like and that life is too short to listen to other peoples' opinions. The age when you realize whole decades of music have been released you seem to like more than what's coming out now. It's not my day was the best. It's just that I know what I like and when the new music in those genres dries up, I dig. I go overseas. Or I phone a friend. I know who knows their shit. And 3rd Eye Blind was always weird meth music like Modest Mouse. Limp Bizkit and Korn where my realizations that what is "cool" is often just a little bit off from stuff that already came out and is better (respectively, RATM and Soulfly do both styles better). I realized this in middle school. So did I fall for the Hoopastank or Sum 41 hype? Oh hell nah. I was already busy digging into old reggae, punk, and more. Critics lose sight of the fact that not everyone started really listening when they did!

  • Its cool to see Mr. DeRogatis on here, he taught my Music and Media class at Columbia College Chicago and was passionate asf about talking about music, along with his hatred for Billy Corgan😂

Rashawn Taylor JrRashawn Taylor Jr23 dögum síðan
    • @Rashawn Taylor Jr Like any rockstars onstage persona is the same as real life, in interview he most certainly sounds douchey seeing he doesn't feel the need to pay past members who performed his music.

    • @My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy I see a lot of people have that same sentiment, from the way DeRogatis had described his interview with him in my class and from reading about the Smashing Pumpkins first run as a band he sounded like complete asshole, all Ik is when I saw the Pumpkins in Concert in 2019 he seemed pretty decent to the crowd but then again that’s just a concert and not an actual encounter

  • fun fact: when Wire toured the USA in 1987, playing only new material, they hired Jim DeRogatis's Wire cover band to play Pink Flag in full as the opening act. a few recordings exist of these Ex Lion Tamers performances.
