  • I actually found Positions' deluxe tracks better than almost everything in the standard edition. I just hate that they are so short and "bridge-less" that they feel like interludes. And talking about interludes, I loved that Ari put (a lovely) one to transition the older songs to the new ones, it really feels like a new, fresh addition than just throwing some tracks in front of the previous tracklist

  • Artists need a way to keep their sales up, the streaming age has hit the music industry extremely hard. I support all deluxe editions, alternate covers, whatever artists need to do to actually sell their stuff rather than have someone tap on their song and turn it off after 10 seconds on streaming. We should all be supporting that, it’s weird to me people ripping artists for selling their art. If we were in their shoes we would want to get maximum sales too right?

  • As a Quebec french guy, i listen a lot of US music and France french music too. Deluxe edition is mostly a french trend of the last 4-5 years. Every big artist in France since a couple of year release "re-edition" (basically expanded and deluxe) a couple month or the year after ! And every time, it's sold a looooot more copies ! But, some french rapper really add strong 5-10 new songs. Depend of the artist i suppose !

  • My theory on the Eminem one... just a marketing gimmick to make it a deluxe album instead of a standalone sequel album to avoid ending Em's #1 streak. It can't be just leftover tracks when most of them referenced events that happened after the release of the original. I think it was a great album on its own, but I really think tacking it on to the original tracks was just to manipulate the charts and certifications.

  • Migos certainly stands out for one of the first super bloated deluxes. But Uzi dropping “Eternal Atake” THEN “Luv Is Rage 2” was I think the first major artist to drop an entire separate 2nd album as a deluxe.

  • The only person doing deluxe albums correctly is Dua Lipa. So far. A deluxe album should only be used as an anniversary bonus. Ex: Radioheads OKNOTOK Ok Computer Release. I guess. That 3rd LP could also just have been released as a standalone LP. Bc the artwork got tweaked inside. Record names had to be changed. At least keep it to physical maybe. Adding a classic album I never heard before to my library on a steaming service and only having the option to add a deluxe album is such fucking bullshit. Im trying to get the original experience but im hit with all this other nonsense. Live tracks etc. So yeah, Fuck deluxe albums.

    • @The Hive Productions arlo parks just came out with an album in 2020 and its already a deluxe album only on Apple Music. Its the album + a live lo fi lounge set. Like why. Why is this attached to the album. Make it separate. Im going in for the first time, i just want to hear the original album as it was intended. The album in its purest form. The result of decisions that were made. Fuck

  • I really like this video essay especially the midpoint. Deluxe albums are something I dislike expecting, and in line with this I think Nathan Zed has a banger video on the art of album sequencing that kinda highlights what us consumers mean when we say records are bloated and ruin the album listening experience. I personally don't really make playlists and while I don't mind nor dislike them the long play of an album is how I primarily experience an artist so if it becomes a drag I'm upset. ...idk. too many thoughts to formulate ig. They're doing what they have to do to secure the bag but I wish more cared about their art/impact/product more than just that.

  • It’s like you said fantano, streaming is key. Deluxe albums give artists the excuse to say “hey remember my album I dropped a bit ago! There’s more now! It’s okay...but why don’t you just listen to the original bangers again and give me those streams 😉” it’s a shame how streaming has allowed artists to just pump out anything hoping to have one of them be a hit. Truthfully though it’s gonna work because one someone thinks of a notable artist no ones gonna remember their duds but rather their bangers. In the age of streaming albums don’t matter, playlists do.

  • Deluxe Editions only make sense for physical copies. You get extensive liner notes and extra live/demo tracks, that mainly makes sense for collectors. E.g the Super Deluxe Edition of Black Sabbath Vol.4 that just came out - that's an album that has been held in high esteem for 49 years, so it warrants an expanded version - its just arrogant to release one just after the release of a record.

  • Sometimes they can be worthwhile, IMO. For example, Soundgarden's deluxe editions of Badmotorfinger and Supeunknown included bonus tracks and B-sides that were absolutely worth releasing (Blind Dogs, Birth Ritual, Cold Bitch, the demo for Black Rain, Like Suicide (acoustic) and some excellent live material). Weezer's deluxe editions of Blue and Pinkerton included some of their best songs in the form of B-sides and demos (for example, Pinkerton deluxe included essentially most of the songs scrapped from what was to be Songs From the Black Hole, which are all fantastic). But these albums were released as anniversary editions, meaning they were released well after the original albums, and contained songs that fans would have struggled to obtain before. If a deluxe edition is coming out at the same time as the original album, containing songs you could easily obtain, what's the point of making it a "deluxe" edition??

  • Deluxe albums aren’t inherently a bad thing, but it’s just became a cheap gimmick used to increase album streams. The deluxe version of “After Hours” had just 3 songs, but they were all quality songs that could hang with the music on the original. Most of these deluxes are just adding another album’s worth of forgettable and mid songs that a lot of people won’t even wanna listen to twice. As an artist myself, I can understand wanting every song you record to end up being heard some way, but an artist that really cares about their legacy shows some restraint. That’s why we haven’t gotten even a single from Kendrick in years, because he doesn’t wanna drop unless the song really means something. I wish more artists had that same conviction to deliver quality over quantity.
